Italian Snam & Tenova to collaborate on decarbonisation in steel industry

Tenova announced that it has signed an agreement to collaborate with Europe's largest energy infrastructure operator in strategic studies and market analysis to incorporate green hydrogen into metals production processes.

According to Tenova, the aim of the partnership is “to bring integrated, turnkey commercial solutions tested in industrial plants to implement a significant reduction in CO2 and NOx emissions in the metal production process, from melting to processing of semi-finished products”.

“Hydrogen is essential for reducing emissions from the production of steel and other metals, as well as all hard-to-reduce industries such as cement, ceramics, chemicals and refining,” said Cosma Panzacchi, Snam Hydrogen Vice President. said.

While Snam provides its expertise in hydrogen technologies and transportation, Tenova will lend its know-how in the metals industry. The tests will be carried out at Tenova's headquarters in Italy and in an as yet unfinished laboratory at various industrial sites.

"Everyone is talking about green hydrogen, but the truth is that its supply and use is still limited and at the same time pressures to mitigate climate change are getting stronger," Tenova CEO Roberto Pancaldi said. said.

“This is why we develop a ready-to-use solution for our customers directly at their production site. Snam and Tenova's expertise complement each other, and we are ready to face the decarbonisation challenge that Tenova has been working on for years, with solutions that make us ideal technological partners to improve environmental performances without sacrificing economic performance.”

Tenova's combustion systems, which will be an important part of the collaboration, enable the reduction of CO2 emissions in a flexible, scalable manner and can operate with a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen in varying percentages.
