Iran’s steel production dropped by 4.8% in spring 2025

The Iranian Steel Producers Association has released the country’s steel production data for the spring of 2025 (late March to late June). According to the report, Iran’s steel output declined by 4.8% during this period compared to the same quarter of 2024, when the drop was only 1.8%. Experts attribute the sharper decline this year to the intensification of electricity restrictions across the sector.

Power limitations began on April 4, 2025, and escalated to 90% by mid-May. During this period, only facilities with their own power generation plants or those that purchased green electricity were able to continue limited operations.

According to the published datas, among the products in the steel production chain, only sponge iron and iron ore concentrate showed slight growth, which was largely the result of newly added production capacities.

Experts warn that ongoing electricity supply issues are not only reducing production volumes but also weakening the steel sector’s ability to meet domestic demand and fulfill export commitments. If the power constraints persist, their impact is expected to deepen further in the upcoming periods.
