According to the company’s statement, these wheels are designed for transporting ore from mines in northern Sweden under extreme conditions, where temperatures can drop to -40°C and axle loads reach up to 25 tons.
The railway line in question is the heavy-haul Malmbanan, which connects the city of Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik in Norway. It carries some of Europe’s heaviest trains and is widely regarded as a key benchmark for railway engineering and logistics in the European mining sector.
The ULT 25 LL (“Long Life”) wheelset offers customers extended rim life thanks to additional machining allowance, while also allowing for reprofiling when needed.
Reprofiling is made possible by the increased initial rim thickness and optimized tread geometry. Niclas Eriksson, Senior Sales Specialist for Europe and International Markets at Interpipe, stated that the company has been working closely with the customer for a long time to quickly meet their needs and is capable of developing new TSI-approved wheel designs as required.
