Insolvency proceedings initiated against Bengal Steel Industries

India’s National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in Kolkata has ordered the initiation of the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) against Bengal Steel Industries Limited under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.

Insolvency proceedings initiated against Bengal Steel Industries

The process commenced on August 3, 2026, following the tribunal’s order. Rachna Jalaniya was appointed as the resolution professional to oversee the company’s insolvency proceedings and assess claims submitted by creditors.

Jalaniya, who is registered with the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), will handle the relevant procedures throughout the process, including receiving and verifying claims submitted by creditors.

September 3 Deadline for Creditors

As part of the process, financial creditors are required to submit their claims, along with supporting evidence, electronically by September 3, 2026. Other creditors may submit their claims electronically or by post by the same deadline.

The forms required for submitting claims have been made available through the Central Information Repository (CIDR).

Annual General Meeting Process Continues

Following the commencement of insolvency proceedings, Bengal Steel Industries is also continuing preparations for its 79th Annual General Meeting (AGM). The company published notices regarding the AGM in the Financial Express and Ekdin newspapers on August 8, 2026.

According to the notice issued under the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations, AGM notices were sent to registered shareholders on August 7.

The electronic voting process for the AGM is scheduled to be conducted through NSDL from 09:00 on August 28 to 17:00 on August 30. The company’s register of members and share transfer books will remain closed from August 25 to August 31.

Environmental Approval Process for Steel Project Underway

Separately from the company’s financial proceedings, environmental approval work for Bengal Steel Industries’ planned steel production project is also continuing.

The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) is scheduled to hold a public hearing regarding the project at 11:00 on September 16, 2026, at the Huda Panchayat Samiti Hall in Purulia.

While the environmental approval process is being conducted separately from the CIRP, the status of the project could be significant for decisions concerning the company’s restructuring and the future of its operations.
