Indonesia shuts down steel plant for environmental damage

Indonesia's Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has immediately shut down a steel production plant in Tangerang District, Banten province, due to smoke emissions. An inspection on Friday found that thick black smoke from the plant had reached residential areas.

Indonesia shuts down steel plant for environmental damage

According to JakartaGlobe, the blast furnace plant owned by Power Steel Mandiri, which operates in the Cikupa Industrial Complex, was accused of releasing environmentally threatening air pollutants into the atmosphere without adequate treatment systems. The closure comes at a time when Indonesia is tightening environmental controls on industrial activities.

Speaking during a visit to the plant, Minister Hanif said, "Such fumes can be lethal. The smelting process must be done in a closed system to prevent toxic emissions from entering the open air," Minister Hanif stressed. On the minister's instructions, production machines were stopped and the plant was sealed to ensure environmental safety.

Black smoke from the plant's chimney directly affects the surrounding community and motorists, and the inhalable fine particles pose a serious health risk. Hanif said, "This facility lacks the most basic requirement, a dust collection system. This is a serious threat to public health," the Ministry stated.

In addition to the temporary closure, the ministry announced that the plant will be provided with technical support to install chimney systems and advanced filtration technologies that comply with environmental legislation.
