India’s April steel output inches up, exports fall

Finished steel production in April rose by 0.9pc against the previous year to 9.35mn t, while consumption increased by 1pc on the year to 9.05mn t, provisional data from the steel ministry's Joint Plant Committee (JPC) show. Finished steel comprises alloyed and non-alloyed steel.

Exports of finished steel in April dropped by 22pc on the year to 743,000t, while imports fell by 10pc from the previous year to 327,000t.

Higher domestic steel prices have weighed on demand, while weak consumption in Europe and competitive offers from China have also slowed Indian exports in the region.

India's domestic hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices averaged about 76,000 rupees/t ($981,11/t) in April, up by 27pc from a year ago.

India's April crude steel production rose by 3.1pc on the year to 9.85mn t. Hot metal production rose by 1pc against the previous year to 6.39mn t, while pig iron production fell by 4.9pc to 519,000t.

Crude steel production in April by integrated steel producers Sail, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, JSPL, RINL and AM/NS India accounted for 61pc of output, while their finished steel output accounted for 57pc of the total.
