India to impose anti-dumping duty on products from China

India announced that it will impose anti-dumping duty on some China's steels for a period of 5 years.

India to impose anti-dumping duty on products from China

According to the statement made by Indian government officials, anti-dumping duty began to be imposed on some products coming from China on Monday.

Indian Steel Minister Nagendra Nath Sinha stated that New Delhi is monitoring the steel import situation after the steel industry expressed concerns over possible dumping by Chinese vendors.

In the April-July period of 2023, China increased by 62% compared to the same period of 2022 and achieved sales of 0.6 million mt. In addition, it became the second largest steel exporter to India after South Korea. China, the world's number one steel producer, exported mostly cold rolled coils or sheets to India.

It imported 2 million metric tons of finished steel, the highest figure since 2020.

This should suppress Chinese steel as imports increased by 62%. Such a tariff will benefit domestic producers who have been hit hard by such imports and are facing low capacity utilization. Steel mills are expecting higher production and lower prices following the introduction of a tariff on steel wheels from China. The steel wheel market in India is small, which allows steel manufacturers to enter and lower prices. This also means that local steel manufacturers will be preferred by Indian wheel manufacturers as they will be able to offer more competitive prices. The decision was made after it became clear that Chinese exporters are exporting steel products to other countries at significantly reduced prices
