India strengthens steel quality standards

The Indian government has announced the inclusion of 151 steel standards in the Quality Control Order (QCO) to ensure the quality of steel products consumed in the country. These standards, created by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), form part of a comprehensive initiative to standardize all steel products.

To enhance the enforceability of the standards, the government is strictly scrutinizing imported steel shipments, preventing substandard products from entering the country's market. This step aims to ensure that both consumers and industries have access to high quality steel.

With the implementation of the QCO, all steel products, whether manufactured locally or imported, must meet BIS standards. Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license to ensure compliance with specifications, testing methods, and production processes. This standardization ensures the supply of reliable and high-quality steel across the market.

Additionally, the government is taking strategic steps to enhance the global competitiveness of India’s steel sector. A working group has been established to develop the "India’s Steel Global Outlook Strategy," focusing on collaboration in four key areas, including raw materials and investments.

After extensive discussions with stakeholders, the working group will prepare a strategy paper that determines action plans and cooperation areas for priority countries. This initiative aims to ensure that the Indian steel sector becomes more sustainable and competitive on a global scale.
