India imposes Anti-Dumping duty on stainless steel pipes

The Indian government has decided to impose anti-dumping duties on welded stainless steel pipes and tubes imported from Vietnam and Thailand for five years. This step was taken on the recommendations of the Directorate General for Trade Promotion (DGTR). The duty ranges from $246 to $307 per ton depending on the producer and country of origin. The DGTR had initiated the investigation after finding that these imports were being made into India at low prices and that the domestic industry was being harmed. The investigation covered the period from April 2022 to March 2023.

Thai producers, excluding I Stainless Steel Co Ltd, will be charged a duty of $246 per ton, while Vietnamese producers, excluding Sonha SSP and Steel 568 Co, will be charged $307 per ton. The investigation was initiated following an application by the Stainless Steel Pipe and Tube Manufacturers Association in India and associations in the same sector in Gujarat. Domestic producers in India account for half of the country's stainless steel pipe production.

Foreign steel producers, on the other hand, argued that the products under investigation should be excluded, claiming that they were certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME-BPE) and were not available in India.
