India aims to increase high-quality steel production in the automotive sector

Indian Steel and Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced plans to develop special high-quality steel to reduce the country's automotive industry's dependence on imports. The announcement was made at the annual congress of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Minister Kumaraswamy stated that India has long been dependent on imports for high-quality steel, which is critical not only for automotive components but also for defense and strategic sectors. He emphasized that demand for high-quality steel has increased with the launch of mega projects across the country.

Kumaraswamy reported that as of March 2025, companies under the PLI Automobile program have made capital investments of 29,576 crore rupees, including establishing new production facilities and operating technology. He said the program has created thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities in production, supply chain management, and R&D.

In his video message, the minister said the steel industry aims to reduce dependence on imports by developing special steels needed by the automotive sector. Kumaraswamy said, “As the ministry, we will provide all necessary support to the automotive sector and will be a strong supporter of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.”

Furthermore, Kumaraswamy emphasized that while the government can create supportive policies, it is the industry, research institutions, and startups that will bring innovation to life, calling on all stakeholders to take bold steps and make India a pioneer in sustainable mobility.

As recalled, in September 2021, the Union Cabinet approved the PLI Scheme for Automobiles and Auto Components with a budget expenditure of 25,938 crore rupees.
