Hyundai Steel has granted the final acceptance certificate FAC to SMS group following the successful completion of the modernization of the No.1 continuous galvanizing line CVGL#1 at its Dangjin plant in South Korea.

Hyundai Steel grants fac to SMS group after modernization at Dangjin facility

It is reported that the works carried out under the multi stage upgrade project have led to an increase in operational efficiency, an improvement in product quality and enhanced long term reliability of the line. With the modernization, Hyundai Steel is expected to respond more effectively to the increasing performance demands, particularly from the automotive sector.

Within the scope of the project, SMS group renewed both the mechanical and automation systems of the line. These upgrades contributed to improved process stability while enabling an extension of the service life and an increase in the capacity of the continuous galvanizing line.

The upgrade works were carried out in two phases in order to maintain production continuity. In the first phase, post screening equipment was modernized. In this context, a new strip cleaning machine, strip dryer and optimized bridle roll units were commissioned, while new bridle motors and drive systems were installed. The X Pact line drive control and automation solution, adapted to the line requirements, enabled precise tension and elongation control, contributing to improved strip quality and more stable production at higher speeds.

In the second phase, the focus shifted to the skin pass mill. SMS group fully renewed the technological control system and integrated the latest X Pact embedded control unit. In addition, new hydraulic blocks and advanced servo valves were commissioned for the hydraulic gap control HGC and work roll bending systems. With these improvements, strip thickness and flatness control were enhanced, tension stability increased and maintenance requirements decreased.

SMS group’s automation team carried out a fast commissioning process with minimal software adjustments, limiting production related risks and ensuring that the line returned to normal operations within a short period.

Jin Hyeong Park, senior manager of the cold rolling maintenance team at Hyundai Steel, stated that the long standing cooperation with SMS group remains important and emphasized that the latest modernization has strengthened production capacity while supporting quality and efficiency targets.

The cooperation between the two companies dates back to 2005, when the existing line was transformed into one of the world’s first combined continuous annealing and galvanizing lines. Nearly 20 years later, the latest modernization has further enhanced the CVGL#1 line as a result of long term technical collaboration.

With the commissioning of the modernized line, Hyundai Steel is expected to maintain high operational standards in its galvanized product portfolio while meeting increasing customer demand.
