A general photograph of the current production structure in the world, nowadays when new production technologies and methods for green steel production are discussed in the world.
In 2020, 1 billion 65 million tons (56.7%) of the 1 billion 877 million tons of steel produced in the world was made by China. The production of the world outside of China was only 812 million tons. 253 million tons less than China's production.
In 2020, 73.2% of the total crude steel production worldwide was realized in integrated facilities (BOF), 26.3% in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facilities and 0.5% in OHF and other technology facilities. The distribution in the Chinese steel industry, which realizes 57% of the world production, is 90.8% integrated plants and 9.2% Electric Arc Furnace plants.
In fact, although the production structure in the world steel industry seems to be in favor of integrated facilities with 73.3%, this is a picture completely shaped by China.
Excluding China, the distribution of BOF-EAF in world crude steel production is quite balanced. In the total crude steel production of the world excluding China, the share of integrated facilities is 50%, and the share of facilities with Electric Arc Furnaces is 49%. The weight of BOF over 90% in China, which produces 57% of the world's production, increases the weight of BOF, which is 50% in the world, excluding China, to 73%, while reducing the weight of EAFs from 49% to 26%.
In this respect, when the predominantly publicly owned BOF technology facilities in China are excluded, it becomes clear that world steel production is shared by EAF and BOF technology facilities in half.
