As part of the modernization project, the existing two rolling mill stands will be replaced with SMS’s CCS® (Compact Cartridge Stand) technology.
The project covers the replacement of Yamato Steel’s current universal roughing (UR) and edging (E) stands with new CCS® systems, which provide improved product quality and high stand rigidity. Thanks to its compact design, the CCS® technology offers an ideal solution for modernizing existing facilities, such as Yamato Steel’s heavy profile rolling mill.
SMS’s supply scope includes CCS® 1000 and CCS® 500 E rolling mills suitable for a wide range of products, including H and I beams and U-type plate piles. The new mills combine both universal and two-high rolling modes with hydraulic cylinder adjustment and fast automatic changeover features.
The upgrade project also includes the installation of new work roll tables with flange cooling and high-pressure lime treatment units. SMS will also supply the CCS® Tandem Rolling Control System (TCS), which aims to increase production efficiency and minimize downtime through real-time process control, dynamic automatic gap control (AGC), and automatic roll gap adjustment.
The modernization is scheduled for completion by summer 2028. SMS Group will ensure seamless integration with the existing systems by covering the entire process, including engineering, key equipment, automation, technical support, spare parts, and consumables.
With this investment, Yamato Steel aims to enhance the operational capabilities of its heavy profile rolling mill and strengthen its leading position in Japan’s structural steel and plate pile production. The collaboration between Yamato Steel’s main shareholder, Yamato Kogyo, and SMS Group represents a long-standing successful partnership.
In the past, SMS Group has collaborated on numerous projects with various companies affiliated with Yamato Kogyo. These projects include the modernization of Nucor Yamato Steel facilities in the US, the construction of a new mini mill for heavy profiles at SULB Company in Bahrain, and the establishment of a mini mill for medium profiles at Siam Yamato in Thailand.
