World crude steel production decreased by 6.5% in August

World crude steel production decreased by 6.5% yoy to 144.8 million tons in August 2024.

World crude steel production decreased by 6.5% in August

The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced crude steel production figures for August 2024. Accordingly, world crude steel production of 71 countries was 144.8 million tons in August 2024, decreasing by 6.5% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Crude steel production according to regions

In August, Africa's crude steel production decreased by 7.2% year-on-year to 1.9 million tons. In the Asia and Oceania region, production decreased by 8% to 107.1 million tons. The EU (27) produced 9.1 million tons of steel, up 2.2%, while the rest of Europe produced 3.7 million tons, up 8.4%.  Production in the Middle East decreased by 3.2% to 3.4 million tons. In North America, production decreased by 3.8% to 9 million tons. Production in Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and Ukraine decreased by 8.7% to 7 million tons. South America produced 3.6 million tons of crude steel, up 0.8%.

China, which came first in the world crude steel production ranking in August, produced 77.9 million tons, decreasing by 10.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. India's crude steel production increased by 2.6% to 12.3 million tons, while Japan produced 6.9 million tons, decreasing by 3.9%. The US produced 7 million tons of steel, up 0.7%, while Russia produced 5.8 million tons, a decrease of 11.5%. South Korea's production decreased by 2.2% to 5.5 million tons. Germany produced 2.9 million tons of crude steel, decreasing by 0.5%, Turkey produced 3.1 million tons, up 13.8%, and Brazil produced 3 million tons, up 7.3%. Iran's production decreased by 9.9% to 1.4 million tons.
