At a ceremony held in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, it was announced that the mine will now operate without using water, will produce no waste, and will eliminate the need for dams. Vale’s CEO Gustavo Pimenta said in his opening speech, “Capanema represents a new stage of mining in Minas Gerais and strengthens our commitment to a more responsible production process.”
The company also plans to invest 67 billion reais ($12.36 billion) in its operations in Minas Gerais by 2030. Most of the investments will focus on filtering iron ore waste and expanding the use of dry stacking methods. Vale aims to reduce dam usage from the current 30% level to 20%.
Vale, one of the world’s largest iron ore producers, will also allocate resources to modernize its five operational complexes in the state. This will include improvements in geotechnical structure management, strengthening connection infrastructure, and renewing its fleet.
