According to the company's statement, the critical air quality permit was approved last Friday, enabling site preparations to begin at the facility located in Braddock and North Braddock. The slag recycling facility is the first among the Mon Valley projects to receive construction approval from the health department.
Currently, slag is directed to one of two open pits, cooled with water, and then sent to an area where pollutants can leach into the soil. The new facility will process the slag into smaller pieces suitable for industrial use. In particular, cement manufacturers use slag to facilitate the processing of their products and increase durability.
US Steel officials stated that the fully enclosed system at the facility will reduce sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide emissions by up to 50%. The facility is considered an important step for human health and environmental safety. Environmental organizations continue to review the approval process.
