According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), U.S. domestic crude steel production reached 1,768,000 net tons in the week ending July 19, 2025. The capacity utilization rate for the same period was recorded at 78.0%.
In the same week last year, ending July 19, 2024, production was 1,696,000 net tons and the capacity utilization rate was 76.4%. Based on these figures, U.S. crude steel production increased by 4.2% y/y.
However, a weekly decline in production was observed. In the previous week ending July 12, 2025, production was 1,783,000 net tons, with a capacity utilization rate of 78.7%. This indicates a weekly decrease of 0.8%.
Production has increased by 0.8% since the beginning of the year
From the beginning of 2025 to July 19, adjusted domestic crude steel production reached 48,750,000 net tons with a capacity utilization rate of 76.2%. In the same period last year, this figure was 48,365,000 net tons. Thus, production has increased by 0.8% since the beginning of the year.
Production distribution by region
As of the week ending July 19, 2025, the distribution of crude steel production in the US by region was as follows (in thousand net tons): Northeast: 118, Great Lakes: 561, Midwest: 223, South: 798, West: 68 thousand tons.
