In the January–August period of 2025, Ukraine's steel sector experienced a decline in exports while observing strong growth in domestic demand. The country’s steel exports decreased 13% compared to the same period last year, dropping to 2.48 million tonnes.
In contrast, domestic consumption increase by 22.4%, reaching 2.81 million tonnes, of which 1.04 million tonnes were met through imports. Import volumes also increased 25.1% as yearly.By product category, semi-finished steel exports decreased 39.9% to 803,000 tonnes, while long steel exports increased 44.6% to 577,000 tonnes. Flat steel exports remained stable at approximately 1.1 million tonnes.
In imports, flat products received a share for 70.2%, long products for 21%, and semi-finished products for 8.8%.In exports, the European Union led with an 81.4% share, while 52.7% of imports came from other European countries.
Analysts stated that the strengthening of domestic demand presents opportunities for local producers, while the decline in exports could have implications for trade balances and supply chains.
