Ukraine's ferroalloy exports increase in May 2024

In May 2024, Ukrainian ferroalloy companies exported 5.53 thousand tonnes of products, which is 88.6% less than in May 2023, but significantly higher than in the previous month (0.45 thousand tonnes). Ferroalloy export revenue decreased by 86.3% year-on-year compared to April, but increased 4.7 times compared to the same month of the previous year and reached $5.88 million. May export volume was the highest since November 2023. From December 2023 to April 2024 there was a record decrease in ferroalloy shipments by 0.2-0.4 thousand tonnes.

In January-May 2024, Ukrainian ferroalloy enterprises exported 6.67 thousand tonnes of products, which is 95.7% less than in the same period last year. The main consumers of Ukrainian ferroalloys were Poland (43.2%), Romania (35.5%) and Moldova (5.3%).

The Zaporizhzhya Ferroalloy Plant (ZPF) resumed production on 1 May this year after a shutdown since March 2023 due to persistently high electricity prices and low ferroalloy prices on the world market. This was announced by Pavel Kravchenko, chairman of the company's board of directors. The company is currently operating two furnaces, which is only 7% of its total capacity. Kravchenko explained that products are supplied to those with whom contracts have been signed.

Serhiy Kudryavtsev, Executive Director of the Association of Ferroalloy Producers of Ukraine, said that the Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant (NFP) is being considered for restart, while Pokrovsky GOK, Marganets GOK and Pobuzh Ferronickel Plant (PFZ) are idle. He also noted that the state of Ukraine's ferroalloy industry in 2024 will depend on three factors: artillery fire, logistics and electricity situation.
