UK Prime Minister to announce GBP 35 million new contract for Türkiye’s high-speed rail project

UK Prime Minister to announce GBP 35 million new contract for Türkiye’s high-speed rail project

British Steel’s new contract follows a similar-sized supply agreement announced last year for the railway line connecting Mersin to the southern Turkish cities of Adana, Osmaniye, and Gaziantep. These two significant contracts form part of an export package exceeding GBP 400 million, which the UK government plans to unveil ahead of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to hold meetings with numerous leaders from the Indo-Pacific and Africa regions during the summit, aiming to open new trade avenues for British companies. Highlighting the UK’s engineering strength, Starmer stated:
“Working with international partners to create jobs and opportunities at home is key to growth. From steelworkers in Scunthorpe to technicians in Derby, British workers are driving the world forward with their expertise. Our goal is to reach more countries, creating high-skilled jobs and supporting economic growth.”

Lisa Coulson, British Steel’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration with Türkiye in sustainable transport projects: “We previously delivered GBP 30 million worth of rail products to Türkiye’s high-speed rail projects. We are delighted to strengthen this partnership with the new supply contract. Thanks to support from UK Export Finance, being part of these prestigious projects is a great achievement. We believe our collaboration with Türkiye will bring new orders soon and create jobs in Scunthorpe.”

Prime Minister Starmer is also expected to visit a train station in Johannesburg today to inspect Derby-produced trains and announce a new UK–South Africa cooperation agreement aimed at modernizing South Africa’s railway system. The UK government’s Crossrail International will provide strategic consultancy to attract private investment in South Africa’s freight and passenger transport sectors and enhance industry efficiency.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Vietnam have announced a new partnership agreement to accelerate the digital transformation of Vietnam’s railways. This collaboration will transfer the UK’s proven digital infrastructure expertise from the Elizabeth Line project to Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction. Built on Crossrail International’s long-standing relationships in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the agreement will open new opportunities for British engineering, finance, and consulting firms in one of Asia’s fastest-growing markets.
