According to the decree, as of Wednesday, June 5, 2025, tariffs on steel and aluminum purchases from abroad by US-based companies will increase to 50%. However, the tariff rate for the UK will remain at 25% for now under the US-UK Customs Duty Agreement signed last month.
This agreement envisages the complete elimination of steel and aluminum tariffs between the UK and the US. However, due to this agreement, which has not yet entered into force, British exporters will temporarily continue to face existing tariffs. If the deal fails, the UK could face a 50% tariff.
The UK government stated that work is underway to implement the agreement with the US and stated that “we are determined to protect British businesses and jobs”. The government spokesperson added that legislation to implement the agreement will be presented to Parliament at the appropriate time. The opposition Conservative Party described Trump's decision as “a new tariff blow”.
In his decision, President Trump emphasized that the UK should be “treated differently” under the US-UK Economic Prosperity Agreement (EPD) signed on May 8, 2025. However, Trump also warned that if the US finds that the UK does not comply with the terms of the EPD, tariffs on the UK could be increased as of July 9, 2025.
