U. S. Steel approves investments in Pennsylvania and Indiana

New Slag Recycling Facility at Edgar Thomson Plant

At the Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania, a new slag recycling facility is planned to repurpose steelmaking byproducts. U. S. Steel has submitted an “air construction permit” application to the Allegheny County Health Department for the project. Once approved, engineering planning will be finalized, and construction is expected to begin in 2026. The project is estimated to cost approximately USD 100 million.

The new facility aims to reduce air emissions and waste that would otherwise go to landfills by repurposing byproducts such as slag for use in cement production. It also offers the potential for additional revenue through byproduct sales.

USD 200 Million Investment at Gary Works Hot Strip Mill
At the Gary Works plant in Gary, Indiana, approximately USD 200 million will be invested to optimize production costs and expand premium product offerings, including heavy gauge line pipe and automotive steel. Gary Works, U. S. Steel’s largest manufacturing facility on the shore of Lake Michigan, includes both steelmaking and finishing operations.

These projects are part of Nippon Steel’s broader USD 11 billion investment strategy in U. S. Steel, aiming to modernize infrastructure and strengthen production capacity across the company.
