The war in Ukraine and the blockade, which made it impossible to deliver Ukrainian ports to customers by traditional methods, led to a decrease in cast-iron imports. Ukrainian metallurgists decreased pig iron production by 69.8% compared to 2021 to 6.39 million tons. In December, 247 thousand tons of pig iron were produced, which decreased by 85.7% compared to the same period last year.
According to the data, Ukrainian pig iron imports of Turkish metallurgical organizations decreased by 46.7% compared to 2021 and amounted to 157.55 thousand tons. Compared to December 2021, it imported 9.4 thousand tons of pig iron, which is more than 28.4%. Compared to November, this rate decreased by 38.2%. In 2021, the country increased its steel production by 13% compared to 2020 to 40.4 million tons.
In 2022, Turkey, which ranks seventh in steel production, imported 1.35 million tons of pig iron, an increase of 13.3% compared to 2021. In December, pig iron imports decreased by 13.5% to m/m and amounted to 73.89 thousand tons. On a yearly basis, it increased by 16.1%.
Deliveries of Russian pig iron to Turkey increased by 65.9% to 895.1 thousand tons. Brazil is second with 251.24 thousand tons (+97.9%), while Ukraine is third. In this period, Ukraine's share in total iron imports to Turkey was 11.7%, Brazil's share was 18.6% and the Russian Federation's share was 66.3%.
Ukraine's peak iron exports in December 2022 amounted to 97.45 thousand tons, an increase of 24.4% compared to November and a decrease of 69.8% y-o-y. At the end of 2022, Ukraine exported 1.32 million tons of pig iron.
At the end of 2021, Turkey's Ukrainian pig iron imports increased by 8.8% compared to the previous year and amounted to 295.5 thousand tons. Deliveries from Ukraine accounted for 25% of the total peak iron supply.
