At the heart of the supply agreement is TSR40, TSR’s innovative recycled product that has been produced on an industrial scale at the company’s raw materials hub in Duisburg since 2023, and from 2024 onwards also in Hamburg and Amsterdam. TSR40 is manufactured exclusively from post-consumer materials, such as end-of-life vehicles and mixed scrap metal.
Blast Furnace Use and CO₂ Reduction
Thanks to the material properties guaranteed by TSR, TSR40 can be used in thyssenkrupp Steel’s blast furnaces, enabling a reduction in CO₂ emissions. At the same time, the product forms the basis for bluemint® recycled steel.
Flat steel produced by thyssenkrupp Steel using bluemint® recycled is suitable for all conventional applications, including the automotive, packaging and household appliances industries, as well as transformers, wind turbines and electric vehicles. Despite its significantly reduced specific CO₂ emissions, the material properties of bluemint® steel are equivalent to those of conventionally produced steel grades.
Philipp Conze: “TSR40 Is a Key Component of Our Decarbonisation Strategy”
Commenting on the importance of the agreement for the company’s climate targets, Philipp Conze, Chief Financial Officer of thyssenkrupp Steel, stated:
“The recycled product TSR40 is a key component of our decarbonisation strategy. With TSR40, we offer our customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their Scope 3 emissions. At the same time, we are able to meet the growing demand from our customers for a higher share of recycled raw materials in our products.”
Denis Reuter: “Contributing to Low-CO₂ Steel Production”
Denis Reuter, Chief Operating Officer of the TSR Group, described the agreement as a critical step in the transformation of the steel industry:
“As a reliable partner, we see it as our responsibility to supply industry with high-quality recycled raw materials. In doing so, we make an important contribution to the transformation of the steel industry towards low-CO₂ steel production. Only through close cooperation can we ensure security of supply while reducing dependence on unstable supply chains. With our long-standing partner thyssenkrupp Steel, we are sending a clear signal in this regard.”
