In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump shared the tariff letter addressed to Canada with the public. He stated that despite Canada’s retaliations, the U.S. will continue to work with the country, and recalled that tariffs had previously been applied in the context of combating the fentanyl crisis.
Referring to Canada’s retaliatory measures, Trump stated, “Starting August 1, we will impose a 35% tariff on products sent from Canada to the U.S., separate from all existing sectoral tariffs.”
Trump also emphasized that Canadian products rerouted through other countries to the U.S. will face higher tariffs. On the other hand, he announced that if Canada-based companies manufacture in the U.S., these tariffs will not apply, and that approval processes related to this will be expedited.
“If for any reason you decide to increase your tariffs, whatever rate you choose, it will be added on top of our 35% tariffs,” Trump stated, stressing that the issues with Canada go beyond just the fentanyl flow.
He noted that Canada has many tariffs, non-tariff policies, and trade barriers that cause unsustainable trade deficits with the U.S. and emphasized, “The trade deficit is a major threat to our economy and national security. If Canada works with me to stop the flow of fentanyl, we may consider making an adjustment in this letter. These tariffs can be adjusted up or down depending on our relationship with your country.”
