Trump: A 100% additional tariff will be imposed on imports from China

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that, starting from November 1, an additional 100% tariff will be imposed on goods imported from China, on top of the existing duties, and that export controls will be implemented on all critical software.

Trump: A 100% additional tariff will be imposed on imports from China

Trump shared a post on his social media account regarding the issue.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that China had adopted an extremely “hostile” stance in trade by sending a letter announcing that, starting from November 1, it would impose broad export controls on almost all products it manufactures — and even on some products it doesn’t produce itself.

Noting that this would affect all countries without exception and was part of a plan designed years ago, Trump said, “This is something absolutely unheard of in international trade and a moral disgrace in relations with other nations.”

Trump continued:

“Given China’s unprecedented actions, and speaking solely on behalf of the United States — not on behalf of other countries facing similar threats — starting November 1 (or possibly earlier, depending on any measures or changes made by China), the U.S. will impose a 100% tariff on top of the current duties paid on imports from China. In addition, on November 1, we will implement export controls on all critical software.”

Trump said he has not canceled his meeting with Chinese President Xi

U.S. President Trump stated that he has not canceled his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled to take place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

Speaking at a White House press conference about lowering drug prices, Trump answered reporters’ questions afterward.

When asked whether he had canceled his meeting with Xi amid renewed trade tensions, Trump said, “I haven’t canceled it, but I don’t know if it will happen. I’ll still be there.”

Asked if export controls might extend beyond software, Trump hinted that “there could be much more, including aircraft and aircraft parts.”

Emphasizing that China’s actions had taken them by surprise, Trump added: “I have a very good relationship with President Xi, and yet they did this. It wasn’t something I provoked. It was simply a reaction to something they did — and it wasn’t aimed just at us, it was aimed at the entire world.”

Earlier, Trump had posted on social media that China had begun acting “hostilely,” sending letters to countries declaring plans to impose export restrictions on every aspect of rare earth element production.

Trump noted that he had not spoken with President Xi and saw no reason to do so, saying: “This was a real surprise not just for me, but for all leaders of the free world. I was supposed to meet President Xi at APEC in South Korea in two weeks, but now it seems there’s no reason for that.”

In another social media post, Trump reiterated that, as of November 1, the U.S. would impose an additional 100% tariff on imports from China and implement export controls on all critical software.
