Under the investment plan, the existing galvanizing line at the Okayama Works in Kurashiki will be upgraded to produce both hot-dip galvanized and cold-rolled coils on a single production line. The conversion is expected to increase production flexibility and enable the company to respond more effectively to evolving customer demand.
Once the modernization is completed, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes of galvanized and cold-rolled coils. The project will retain the existing annealing furnace while incorporating induction heating and advanced cooling systems to enhance operational efficiency.
To carry out the upgrade, the galvanizing line will be temporarily suspended for approximately three months between December 2026 and February 2027. Tokyo Steel said it will build inventory ahead of the shutdown to minimize any disruption to customer deliveries. Trial production is scheduled for March 2027, with commercial production expected to commence in April 2027.
The investment represents a key step in Tokyo Steel's long-term strategy to expand its portfolio of low-carbon flat steel products manufactured using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology while strengthening its competitiveness in the flat steel market.
