Thyssenkrupp Steel announced that it will commence the supply of bluemint® recycled CO2 reduced steel to the BMW Group in 2026. The material is designated for use in the series production of the BMW iX3, specifically for interior parts, battery housings, and outer panels. This recycled product offers identical properties to conventional steel, meaning the BMW Group isn't required to adapt its existing manufacturing processes.

High surface quality and safety standards

While the automotive industry typically relies on primary steel for outer body components to ensure surface purity, bluemint® recycled meets these high quality requirements through a specialized blast furnace route. By replacing a portion of iron ore with processed scrap, the company achieved a significant decrease in coking coal usage and CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, the use of this steel in battery housings provides essential safety benefits. Steel is non combustible and offers superior electromagnetic shielding compared to lightweight metals. Georgios Giovanakis, Chief Sales Officer at thyssenkrupp Steel, emphasized that the availability of such high quality, CO2 reduced steel for both structural and aesthetic parts demonstrates the massive potential for industrial emission reductions.

Strategic transformation toward carbon neutrality

The integration of recycled content increases the overall recycling rate of the vehicle and supports resource conservation. This partnership is a key element of the broader transformation at thyssenkrupp Steel. The company plans to operate a hydrogen capable direct reduction plant with an annual capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of direct reduced iron.

This technological shift is expected to result in a decrease of CO2 emissions by up to 3.5 million metric tons per year. Thyssenkrupp Steel stated that it intends to transition its entire production line to climate neutral bluemint® steel by 2045 at the latest.
