Thyssenkrupp has postponed the green hydrogen project tender due to high costs

German steel producer Thyssenkrupp Steel has suspended the planned green hydrogen procurement tender for the direct reduction plant in Duisburg.

Thyssenkrupp has postponed the green hydrogen project tender due to high costs

In February 2024, Thyssenkrupp Steel launched a tender to secure renewable and low-carbon hydrogen supply under 10-year contracts. The hydrogen, planned to be delivered via pipeline to the company’s steel plant in Duisburg, was expected to reach 104.000 tons in 2028 and 143.000 tons annually between 2029 and 2035. For 2036–2037, the target volume was set at 151.000 tons per year.

The company initially planned to use natural gas when commissioning the plant and gradually switch to hydrogen as production capacity increased. However, the implementation has reportedly been postponed several times due to limited green hydrogen infrastructure in Europe, the innovative nature of the projects, and uncertainties in the sector.
