The modernization project includes a new cycloconverter for the main press motor, low-voltage multi-drive converters, and DC converters for the pinch rolls, gap adjustment, and roller table. Primetals Technologies will also provide implementation and commissioning services. The project is expected to be completed and commissioned in the third quarter of 2026.
This new order follows the successful modernization work previously carried out by Primetals Technologies at hot strip mill No. 4 in Duisburg. The new upgrade aims to increase equipment availability and ensure long-term security of spare parts supply.
thyssenkrupp Steel’s current drive system is divided into two groups: the main drive supported by a cycloconverter, and auxiliary drives used for the pinch rolls, gap adjustment, and roller table. In the planned work, most of the existing transformers and motors will be preserved, thereby reducing capital expenditures.
Primetals Technologies will also design a special cooling system for the drive rooms. Based on a closed-loop air-to-water system, this solution will ensure efficient cooling while also improving energy efficiency. In addition, an arc fault protection system will be installed to quickly suppress arc flashes in order to increase safety for both personnel and equipment.
thyssenkrupp Steel employs approximately 27,000 people and produces around 11 million tons of crude steel annually. The company aims to optimize its production facilities and shift its product portfolio toward more profitable and higher value-added products. In this context, the production of multiphase and lightweight steels, as well as grades with high surface quality, is being prioritized. The company also plans to increase the production of high-quality electrical steel.
The modernization is being carried out as part of thyssenkrupp Steel’s major investment program. Within this program, Primetals Technologies is also undertaking comprehensive casting and hot strip mill projects in Duisburg.
