The search for balance in Türkiye's imported scrap market continues

Weak demand and rising costs are keeping prices within a narrow range.

The search for balance in Türkiye's imported scrap market continues

In the Turkish imported scrap market, purchasing activity is proceeding cautiously in the post-holiday period. A slight pullback in rebar prices and uncertainty regarding finished product sales are limiting demand for imported scrap. Buyers are not rushing into large-volume purchases, and in the short term, only need-based purchases are taking center stage.

While no significant softening is observed in scrap offers from the U.S. and Europe, strong domestic market conditions and high plant operating rates are supporting the price floor. In particular, U.S. steel producers continuing to operate at high capacity and maintaining long order books are limiting a sharp decline in scrap prices.

Overall, the market is at a balance point where it does not want to fall but lacks the strength to rise. A sharp decline is not expected unless there is a sustained break below $400/t, while a strong upward move is also considered unlikely without a significant increase in demand from China or global construction activity.

In the short term, the outlook is for a flat and cautious trend, supported by a strong domestic market despite export pressure. Pressure could increase if Türkiye moves below $405/t; however, under current conditions, the market is expected to continue balancing within a wide range.
