Tata Steel UK CEO Rajesh Nair has been appointed as the Chairman of UK Steel

A significant leadership change has taken place in the UK steel industry. Rajesh Nair, CEO of Tata Steel UK, has been appointed as the new Chairman of UK Steel, the organization representing the country’s steel industry.

Rajesh, in addition to his role as CEO of Tata Steel UK, brings over 36 years of experience within the Tata Steel Group to this new position, further contributing to the UK steel industry. Having joined Tata Steel UK in 2021 as Chief Operating Officer and becoming CEO in 2023, Rajesh has played a pivotal role in reshaping the business, accelerating the transition to low-CO₂ steel production, and securing the future of domestic steelmaking in South Wales and beyond.

An electrical engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Rajesh has held numerous senior operational and commercial roles within the Tata Steel Group. He has led major transformation programs across global operations — from managing the Cold Rolling Mill complex in Jamshedpur to playing a key role in the 2007 integration of Corus Group into Tata Steel.

Rajesh stated: “It is an honour to be appointed Chair of UK Steel at such a critical time for the sector,” said Rajesh. “We face significant challenges, but also great opportunities to strengthen the industry for the long term. I look forward to working with UK Steel members and stakeholders, engaging closely with the government on the Steel Strategy, and addressing structural issues such as uncompetitive energy costs and high-emission steel imports.”

Gareth Stace, Director General of UK Steel, commented:

“Rajesh’s appointment is excellent news for both UK Steel and the wider sector. In this role, he will bring his vast experience from both global and UK steel operations. As the government prepares to publish a Steel Strategy this autumn, and the industry pursues modernisation and growth, this appointment couldn’t come at a better time.”

Rajesh is also a member of the Board of Directors at Tata Steel UK and serves as Chairman of Surahammars Bruks in Sweden. He is a Fulbright Scholar who has completed advanced management programs at Carnegie Mellon University and CEDEP-INSEAD. With published research and patents in galvanized steel products, Rajesh is also known for his contributions to the World Steel Association committees and is a member of the Indian Institute of Metals.
