Tata Steel Nederland achieves carbon neutrality at plant in Geldermalsen

The news that Tata Steel Nederland has achieved carbon neutrality in the production of steel roof and facade panels at the SAB-profiel unit in Geldermalsen is an important step in the field of environmentally friendly production.

Tata Steel Nederland achieves carbon neutrality at plant in Geldermalsen

This development is an important part of the company's climate-friendly transformation journey and Geldermalsen is the sixth plant of Tata Steel to achieve carbon neutrality.

Tata Steel's Downstream Europe business unit in Europe is behind this achievement. Other plants operating in this business unit include Naantali (Finland), Halmstad (Sweden), Gelsenkirchen (Germany) and Maastricht (Netherlands). These facilities have made significant strides in environmental sustainability by achieving carbon neutrality in scope 1 and 2 emission categories. The Downstream Europe business unit processes steel from the main steelmaking plant in Ijmuiden, minimizing carbon emissions in the process.

Gunilla Saltin, a member of the board of directors of Tata Steel Nederland, said that the company is transforming not only large-scale projects, but also smaller operations with a focus on sustainability. Saltin drew attention to the sustainability potential of downstream operations in particular, noting that about one-third of these locations have already become climate neutral. Tata Steel is accelerating its efforts to make all its operations completely carbon neutral.

However, the company also announced last month that it had to take cost-cutting measures due to deteriorating market conditions. This shows how a company that is trying to take an important step towards achieving its environmental goals is also coping with economic challenges.
