Tata Steel launches waste heat recovery project at Athagarh plant

Tata Steel, one of India's leading steel producers, has taken an important step towards enhancing sustainability in the ferrochrome industry. The company is set to implement a Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) project at its Ferro Alloys Plant at Athagarh in Cuttack district of Odisha state.

Tata Steel has partnered with Comfit Enersav Private Limited and Yantra Harvest, two companies specialized in energy and heat recovery, to implement the project. The three companies signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project last Friday. The ceremony was attended by Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-Charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) of Tata Steel, Ganesh Bhat, Technical Director of Comfit Enersav, Gaurang Bhatt, Technical Director of Yantra Harvest and many senior officials.

A New Step in Sustainability

With this project, FAMD's Athagarh Plant aims to increase energy efficiency and strengthen its sustainable production approach. Within the scope of the project, the heat to be obtained from the upper waste gases released during melting processes in the furnaces will be used to dry chrome ore fines. This will reduce the dependence on furnace oil, thereby reducing environmental impact and providing cost advantages. Energy savings of approximately 3 crore rupees (approximately 360 thousand dollars) are expected to be achieved annually.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Pankaj Satija stated, "Energy, climate change, water and biodiversity are interconnected issues. Through this heat integration process, we are both protecting nature and creating economic value by capturing energy that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. This partnership is an important step towards achieving our goals of lower carbon emissions, high energy efficiency and lower energy costs."

To be Implemented with ESCO Model

The project will be implemented through an Energy Savings Company (ESCO) model within the framework of the Build, Own, Operate (BOO) model. In this structure, the project cost will be covered by the energy savings achieved and the companies will earn income through a performance-based payment system.

With the project, Tata Steel is once again demonstrating its environmentally conscious production approach and setting an example for energy innovation in the Indian ferrochrome sector.
