Tata Steel calls for swift action from UK government for steel sector

Tata Steel UK has urged the government to act “swiftly” to protect the steel industry in England and Wales following the European Union’s plans to halve steel imports and introduce new tariffs, the company told Senedd members.

Tata Steel calls for swift action from UK government for steel sector

Tata Steel UK CEO Rajesh Nair emphasized that “the trading situation is becoming increasingly difficult, and things are moving quite fast.” However, he added that he was “reasonably confident” ministers would deliver the necessary response after discussions with the government.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated his “strong support” for the sector following the European Commission’s proposals, while announcing that new 50% tariffs would be implemented.

Mr. Nair also noted that Tata Steel has “great confidence” that its new, more environmentally friendly electric arc steel plant in Port Talbot will be ready by the end of 2027. “But when we start construction on site over the next few months, I think that will be the real test of how well we can deliver the job on the ground,” he said.
