The US has expanded the scope of additional tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, adding some steel derivative products to the taxation list.
According to the decision published in the US Official Gazette on June 16, 2025, as of June 23, refrigerators-freezers (combined type), chest-type and upright freezers, household dishwashers, automatic and other washing machines, small and large clothes dryers, food waste shredders, ovens and other cooking appliances, and welded steel shelf systems will be subject to an additional customs duty of 50% depending on the steel content of the products when imported into the US.
The HS codes of the products covered by the tax are listed as follows:
- 8418.10.00 - Refrigerator-freezer (combined type)
- 8418.30.00 and 8418.40.00 - Chest type and upright freezers
- 8422.11.00 - Household dishwashers
- 8450.11.00 and 8450.20.00 - Automatic and other washing machines
- 8451.21.00 and 8451.29.00 - Small and large clothes dryers
- 8509.80.20 - Food waste shredders
- 8516.60.40 - Ovens, cookers and other cooking appliances
- 9403.99.9020 - Welded steel shelving systems
In particular, welded steel shelving systems will be covered by Section 232 measures based on their steel content, in addition to the duties previously imposed due to their aluminum content.
