Taiwan's steel mills import pig iron due to insufficient scrap supply

According to Customs statistics, Taiwan's pig iron imports in July 2023 increased by 150% compared to June 2023 and reached 87,500 tons.

Imports from Russia ranked first with approximately 66,300 tons, while Brazil ranked second with 18,300 tons.

Looking at the first half of 2023, Taiwan's pig iron imports were recorded as approximately 129,000 tons. Imports in July reached two-thirds of first half volume.

Some of Taiwan’s steel mills tended to purchase pig iron due to the decreased supply of high-quality scrap. It was expected that pig iron imports in the second half of the year will exceed those in the first half.
