Switzerland removes tariffs on industrial products

Switzerland announces removal of tariffs on industrial products.

Switzerland removes tariffs on industrial products

The Switzerland Ministry of Trade announced that the Switzerland Federal Government, with a press release published on its official website on January 2, 2024, removed customs tariffs on imports of industrial products, regardless of origin, as of January 1, 2024. This is an important move in Switzerland's trade policies.

The official statement, referring to the press release published on the official website of the Switzerland Federal Government, stated that with the removal of customs duties, Switzerland intends to provide a more liberalized environment in the trade of industrial products. This step may offer both local and international companies a more favorable environment for trading with Switzerland.

Switzerland is set to help reducing the administrative burden on companies

This decision of Switzerland can be regarded as part of a strategy aimed at increasing the country's economic integration and supporting its foreign trade. The removal of customs tariffs may strengthen Switzerland's competitive advantage worldwide and make it more attractive in international trade.

In addition to the removal of industrial tariffs, a number of changes have also been made to simplify Swiss tariffs and proof of origin rules, which will help reduce the administrative burden on Swiss companies. Consumers can also benefit from cost savings in a competitive environment. The federal government will examine the impact on the prices of these products under a follow-up program.

Removing industrial tariffs has not changed the customs clearance process as such: importers are still required to file an import declaration and pay other fees and charges arising on imports, including VAT:

The decision introducing the elimination of industrial tariffs was taken by Parliament on October 1, 2021 by amending the Customs Tariff Law. On February 2, 2022, the Federal Assembly scheduled the measure to enter into force on January 1, 2024. Switzerland, as a small, highly integrated economy, is giving a clear signal by removing customs obstacles that it intends to maintain and expand unhindered. Trade flows in an increasingly protectionist global trading environment.
