Stellantis to halt production at six European plants

Weakening demand in the European automotive market has once again forced Stellantis to suspend production.

Stellantis to halt production at six European plants

The carmaker announced that in October it will temporarily close six factories, directly affecting strategic models such as the Fiat Panda, Alfa Romeo Tonale and the newly launched Alfa Romeo Junior.

According to French media, the Poissy plant will shut down from 13 October to 3 November, with part of the workforce placed on short-time work. The Eisenach facility in Germany, the Zaragoza and Madrid plants in Spain, and the Tychy site in Poland will also suspend operations for periods ranging from five to fourteen days. In Italy, the Pomigliano factory, which produces the Fiat Panda and Alfa Romeo Tonale, will remain closed for at least two weeks.

The company cited weakening orders in Europe and seasonal factors as reasons for the decision, framing it as part of an “optimization of production capacity.” Demand from B2B and short-term rental channels has been particularly affected.

However, industry sources suggest the situation is more concerning than official statements indicate. Orders for the Alfa Romeo Tonale are reportedly collapsing, while even the Fiat Panda — long considered a cornerstone of Stellantis’ portfolio — is showing signs of weakness. Fiat sales in Italy fell 10% in September. As a result, Stellantis is reportedly planning to reduce production at Pomigliano from two shifts to one as early as November 2025.
