Stegra launches a new era in green steel production

Stegra has announced the construction of the world’s first integrated large-scale green steel plant, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions in steel production. This low-emission facility is setting a new standard for sustainability in the industry by producing steel using environmentally friendly methods.

Stegra launches a new era in green steel production

Located in Boden, Sweden, the world’s first integrated large-scale green steel plant is set to revolutionize steel production. In this low-emission facility, Stegra aims to produce sponge iron with a 95% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional methods, using green hydrogen produced from renewable energy. This sponge iron will be melted in an electric arc furnace to produce high-quality steel.

The project will prioritize sustainability in the European steel sector with large-scale hydrogen-based direct reduction iron production. The plant aims to produce 5 million tons of green steel annually by 2030 and, once operational, will prevent the emission of 7 million tons of CO₂ per year. Additionally, it will create 2,000 direct job opportunities.

The project has received a 250 million euro grant from the European Innovation Fund, securing a total of 6.5 billion euro in financing. Stegra, which aims to combine sustainability with high efficiency in steel production, is setting an important example for the industry. The plant is expected to promote sustainable production in the global steel market and contribute to Europe's carbon emission reduction goals.
