SSAB partners with AFRY on fossil-free steel production

SSAB, a leading company in sustainable steel production, has signed a main engineering partner agreement with AFRY for a new fossil-free steel mini-mill to be built in Luleå, Sweden.

SSAB partners with AFRY on fossil-free steel production

This project is part of SSAB's strategy to transform its blast furnace-based steel production to a concept using electric arc furnaces (EAFs).

AFRY will provide the basic and detail engineering services for the mini-mill, with the project planned for completion between 2024 and 2026. These comprehensive services encompass the melting and hot rolling complex, electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, thin slab casting, hot rolling, infrastructure, and auxiliary services.

Target: 2.5 million tonnes

The new mini-mill aims to produce 2.5 million tonnes of fossil-free steel annually. Upon completion, it will enable SSAB to decommission its existing blast furnace-based facility in Luleå, reducing Sweden's annual CO2 emissions by 7%. This is a significant environmental impact, in addition to the 3% reduction resulting from the Oxelösund plant's transformation.

Nicholas Oksanen, President of AFRY's Process Industries, stated: "We are pleased to continue our strong partnership with SSAB in this green transformation project aimed at decarbonizing steel production. AFRY's local and global expertise combined with SSAB's in-depth knowledge of the projects will ensure high-quality and efficient project delivery." The new production line is planned to be operational by the end of 2028.
