SSAB, Outokumpu, and Alfa Laval join forces for sustainable steel

SSAB, Outokumpu, and Alfa Laval have entered into a strategic partnership to use low-emission steels in Alfa Laval’s plate heat exchangers. This collaboration aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the products by up to 60%, highlighting the contribution of cross-industry collaborations to global sustainability.

SSAB, Outokumpu, and Alfa Laval join forces for sustainable steel

In the Laakso Hospital renovation project, carried out by the City of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital (HUS), Alfa Laval's advanced technology equipment was chosen for the new cooling system in line with energy efficiency and low-emission targets. The solutions utilizing SSAB Zero™ steel and Outokumpu Circle Green® stainless steel emphasize the importance of environmental sustainability in the construction sector.

It was stated that the Laakso Joint Hospital will be one of the four major hospital complexes in the Helsinki region, and ambitious environmental goals regarding energy efficiency, embedded carbon emissions, and life cycle costs have been set for the project.

Tony Harris, President of SSAB Europe, explained this collaboration by stating, “This is one more great step towards a more sustainable future. We are proud to work with companies like Alfa Laval and Outokumpu, since our goal is to build a fossil-free value chain together with our partners and customers. SSAB Zero™ is made using recycled steel. By using fossil-free energy during production, the fossil carbon emissions are virtually zero.”

Julien Gennetier, Vice President of Alfa Laval's Energy Division, highlighted, “Our heat exchangers already contribute to reducing our customers' emissions during operation. By utilizing low-emission steel, we are also decreasing emissions in their upstream value chain. This collaboration serves as a model for how local initiatives can have a global impact, pushing the boundaries and scaling up the usage of low-emission materials.”
