SSAB collaborates with SMS group to build a sustainable cold rolling mill in Sweden

Thanks to the advanced automation and process equipment to be provided by SMS group, this new complex will enable the production of 3rd generation advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) for the automotive industry.

SSAB, a leader in global steel production, has placed an order with SMS group for this sustainable steel production project in Luleå, Sweden. The project demonstrates the company's commitment to fossil-free technologies and processes, and the new cold rolling complex will utilize SMS group's advanced technology solutions.

The new plant will include key production lines such as a pickling line/tandem cold rolling machine with CVC® technology, continuous galvanizing line, continuous annealing and galvanizing line, winding and inspection line, as well as auxiliary units such as an acid recovery plant, roll shop, coil logistics and water treatment facilities.

The project places special emphasis on high levels of automation and optimization of operational processes, efficient material flows and logistics arrangements. The new complex, which will have an annual production capacity of approximately 1.3 million tons, will increase the production of 3rd generation advanced high-strength steel, especially demanded by the automotive industry.

The cold rolling mill will be able to process steel strip in thicknesses between 0.4 mm and 2.5 mm and up to 1,900 mm wide, thus offering a diverse product range.
