SSAB and EMW have formed a partnership for fossil-free steel production

Swedish steel producer SSAB and Germany-based steel service center EMW have signed a strategic partnership aimed at delivering fossil-free steel.

SSAB and EMW have formed a partnership for fossil-free steel production

The agreement will enable EMW to further reduce the carbon footprint of its products and make a significant contribution to sustainability goals in the automotive sector.

EMW operates as part of the Schäfer Werke Group and supplies coils, strips, cut to size, and raw steel as an independent steel service center in Europe. Specializing in high-quality and durable steel products, particularly for the automotive sector, the company aims to make a difference in the industry with its environmentally friendly solutions.

Claus Doré, SSAB's European Automotive Area Sales Manager, stated in his remarks about the collaboration, "We are pleased to support EMW's sustainability vision. Our steel, which has nearly zero fossil carbon emissions, maintains its high quality while having a significantly lower climate impact compared to traditional methods. This provides our customers with both environmental benefits and a competitive advantage."

In 2021, SSAB produced the world's first fossil-free steel using HYBRIT technology. This revolutionary technology uses hydrogen instead of carbon to extract sponge iron from iron ore, releasing only water instead of emissions. The company has already made pilot deliveries to customers in various industries using this method. When commercial production begins, SSAB's fossil-free steel products will have CO₂ emissions below 0.11 CO₂e per pound, according to the GHG Protocol's Scope 1, 2, and 3 criteria.

EMW General Manager Holger Latsch stated, “The collaboration with SSAB marks a turning point in our journey toward climate-friendly steel processing. Fossil-free steel is the material of the future. This partnership reinforces our commitment to combining ecological responsibility with technological excellence.”

The new partnership marks an advanced stage in the long-standing collaboration between EMW and SSAB. The agreement, which encompasses a comprehensive development chain from sales to production, testing processes, and end-user experiences, serves as a strong example of inter-company collaboration in sustainable steel supply.
