SSAB has signed an agreement with Danieli for a highly automated technology solution for its new mini steel mill in Luleå, Sweden. The plant will have a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year and will produce in line with SSAB's low emission targets.
The contract, which follows an Early Service Agreement in July 2024, will see Danieli provide an integrated production line including two electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, continuous casting and flat product rolling units. The plant will produce flat rolled products ranging from 1.3 mm to 25.4 mm thick, up to 2100 mm wide and weighing up to 40 tons.
The steel mill will be equipped with two Digimelter systems, each with a capacity of 210 tons. These systems will provide thermal recovery with the Q-One energy feeder, while the ECS continuous scrap feeding system and MeltModel software will provide dynamic melt profile control. In addition, two twin-pot refining stations and vacuum degassing units will support quality-oriented production.
With the investment, SSAB will end its blast furnace-based production in Luleå and switch to all-electric production, reducing Sweden's total CO₂ emissions by 7%. This transformation, together with the previous 3% emission reduction at the Oxelösund plant, is considered a significant step in SSAB's sustainability strategy.
