SSAB and BE Group announced cooperation for fossil-free steel

Swedish steelmaker SSAB and service company BE Group partnered on 22 May to identify significant new demand and opportunities for fossil-free steel.

SSAB and BE Group announced cooperation for fossil-free steel

"We are extremely pleased to welcome BE Group Oy as a fossil-free steel partner," said Lotta Ruottinen, Sales Director Europe at SSAB.

"At BE Group, we are focusing on expanding our fossil-free steel offering to all our markets," said Peter Andersson, CEO of BE Group.

The partnership will help BE customers better understand how to market and position their end products using premium fossil-free steel grades, while ensuring stability as they transition to producing fossil-free end products. The partnership will also help SSAB plan future production runs for specific grades of fossil-free steels.

SSAB aims to produce fossil-free steel on a commercial scale by 2026. Under the HYBRIT initiative, SSAB is working with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall to develop a value chain for fossil-free iron and steel production, using fossil-free electricity and hydrogen to replace the coking coal traditionally used in iron ore-based steel production.
