Hereu, who attended the EU Competition Council meeting held in Brussels, emphasized that sectors such as steel, aluminum, and automotive are strategically important both for Europe and Spain. He stated, “The relocation of these sectors outside Europe is unacceptable. We expect clear and effective policies from the European Commission to promote the reshoring of industry.”
ArcelorMittal recently announced plans to relocate some of its support services in Europe to India. This decision has sparked renewed debate within the EU regarding industrial sovereignty and the security of supply chains.
In March, the Commission announced a support package for the European steel industry. The package aims to strengthen the internal market and protect domestic production amid escalating global trade tensions. However, according to Hereu, these efforts are insufficient: “Industrial policies are vital for strategic autonomy. Funding must be provided in a planned manner to support transformation, digitalization, and the transition to the Green Deal.”
Hereu also emphasized the need to safeguard all stages of steel production within Europe, especially in Spain. “We must not lose the integrated steel production cycle. Therefore, the EU’s action plans should go beyond mere proposals; concrete and funded measures must be implemented.”
