Following the successful completion of the pickling line and tandem cold rolling mill integration tests and staff training in 2023, these tests are seen as an important step towards improving Habaş A.Ş.'s steel production processes.
The project has progressed in a planned and determined manner over the past year, demonstrating the technical excellence and effective project management approach shared by both SMS group and Habaş. Habaş, which operates at a plant near İzmir, continues to make significant investments to modernize and increase production capacity.
Following the start-up of the pickling line and tandem cold mill (PLTCM) project in October 2021, the second part of the contract was commissioned in April 2023, marking a new phase in the cooperation with SMS group. This is considered a new milestone in the long-standing partnership. Thanks to the new investments, Habaş plans to significantly increase its capacity in cold strip production and strengthen its competitiveness in the sector. Installation of the pickling line and the tandem cold rolling mill is expected to be completed in August 2025.
To maximize product quality and cold strip properties, Habaş has ordered an offline skin-pass rolling line, two continuous galvanizing lines (CGL1 and CGL2), a recoiling and inspection line (RCL) and a tension compensation line from SMS group. This will enable the company to produce a wide range of products such as deep drawing material and high-strength steel grades.
Digital automation commissioning: X-Pact® Plug & Work integration test successfully completed
For the digital commissioning of automation systems, SMS group installed all the automation systems of Habaş dedicated plants at the test center in Mönchengladbach, Germany, and integrated them with the plant and production simulation. The digital twin of the integrated plant, developed in parallel with the engineering process, was brought to life during the X-Pact® Plug & Work test, incorporating simulation data. The digital twin is continuously enriched with online data from real plants, improving the performance of the system.
Haşim Ayten, Habaş Plant Manager, emphasized the importance of the tests: “The Plug and Work integration test provided us with an invaluable opportunity to ensure all automation systems functioned seamlessly before installation. The realistic simulations and thorough testing allow us to confidently proceed with the commissioning, knowing that our systems are optimized for efficiency and reliability.”
With X-Pact® Plug & Work testing, the hardware and software developed for customer-specific plants are pre-optimized and tested as a complex whole at test sites. This method saves Habaş time and ensures fast commissioning, high product quality from the start and a ready, stable production environment.
