SMS and Pittini Group succeed in hydrogen steelmaking tests

Industrial tests for the use of SMS Group's hydrogen burner in electrical steel production successfully completed at the Pittini Group Ferriere Nord plant in Osoppo, Italy.

SMS and Pittini Group succeed in hydrogen steelmaking tests

The tests, involving representatives from RINA, Nippon Gases Italy, and Celsa Barcelona, verified the burner's capacity to process hydrogen content from 0% to 100% with an average power of 3 MW. Furthermore, additional test campaigns of 4 MW took place. The mechanical and thermal durability of the burner under EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) conditions were also tested. During various melting processes, only the hydrogen burner was used at some temperatures, and performance was compared with other burners. The results are stated to be without any problems and in line with expectations.

The tests were conducted as part of the “DevH2forEAF” project supported by the European Union's Research Fund for Coal and Steel. The project aims to integrate hydrogen as a primary fuel source in electric arc furnaces and to revolutionize steel production.

The next phase is expected to take place at the Celsa Steel plant in Barcelona, Spain, and expectations are reportedly increasing.
