Significant growth in Iran’s steel billet production over the past 13 years

The Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced that the country’s steel billet production has more than doubled over the past thirteen years. According to official statistics, production has increased from around 13.6 million tons in 2011 to over 30 million tons in 2024.
This surge in production has placed Iran among the world’s top 10 steel producers, securing the ninth position globally. Consequently, Iran not only holds the top rank in crude steel production in the Middle East but has also strengthened its position in global markets.
Experts believe that the increase in steel production capacity is the result of extensive investments in the mining and downstream industries, the completion of semi-finished projects, and the development of modern production technologies. Moreover, the growth in steel product exports in recent years shows that the sector plays a key role in advancing the country’s non-oil economy.
According to IMIDRO, the steel industry is now considered one of the main pillars of Iran’s industrial development and job creation. Expanding the value chain from iron ore extraction to the production of finished steel products has not only created wide employment opportunities but also boosted foreign exchange earnings and reduced dependence on oil exports.
At a time when the global steel market faces challenges such as declining demand and price fluctuations, Iran continues to strengthen its international standing by relying on its abundant mineral resources, skilled workforce, and advanced technical capabilities.
